Simple Christmas Stocking

This is my son’s first Christmas so I thought I better decorate a little. I don’t have much time these days so I needed something I could throw together quickly (and practice my free-motion quilting on, didn’t I improve a lot?) This is a fun, simple, and elegant (depending on fabric choices) stocking that could be embellished or left plain and looks fantastic. .

What you will need:
*The stocking template from this Martha Stewart stocking (or one of your choice)
Main fabric for stocking
Main fabric for binding
Main fabric for loop
Lining fabric
Batting

*I increased the size of the pattern by 200% to achieve a 16″ tall stocking (final size.) Below is a screenshot showing you how I printed it out using page scaling settings. Cut along dotted line, do not cut out any notches, and disregard any other instructions on the template.

Cut out six pieces from stocking template: 2 main fabric, 2 lining fabric, and 2 batting.

Quilt together a “sandwich” of one main fabric, one batting, and one lining piece. Repeat for remaining pieces.

Now we will bind each stocking half.

Cut two strips of main fabric 2.5″ wide and the length of the cuff of the stocking.

Fold a strip in half (wrong sides together and press) and sew it to the front of one of the sides of the stocking with a 1/4″ seam allowance and raw edges together.

Repeat with other stocking piece and then finish by hand-sewing the binding to the other side.

Now we are going to make the hanging loop.

With the main fabric strip (mine was 2.5"wide by 8.5" inches long) fold in half lengthwise and press.

Open the fabric and fold in each edge to the center and press.

Fold in half lengthwise again so fold edges are together.

Topstitch along each side.

Baste to one side of stocking as shown. I sewed mine on about a 1/2″ from the top.

Sew both sides of stocking together (right sides facing) with at least a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Notch rounded parts of stocking seam, trim excess fabric and threads, and turn right side out. Hang proudly!
